The Chevrolet Cobalt has been one of the most popular vehicles in the Toronto, Ontario area and throughout North America since it launched in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Compacts are in high demand, and while the Civic and Corolla still grab much of the media attention, cars like the Cobalt have spent the latter half of the decade taking a huge bite out of this coveted segment.

So what is Chevrolet Toronto doing right with the Cobalt? For starters, the car is affordable, and thats especially important in times like these. The car lists at an MSRP between -15K, but most consumers can buy it at far below that mark. Secondly, they sell a turbocharged SS version that produces 260 horsepower. This helps to generate excitement, avoid the boring compact image, and even snatch a niche segment of the compact market.

The current Cobalt is available in two body styles (sedan and coupe), and Chevrolet offers the LS, LT, and SS trim packages on both. The LS is an extremely nice standard package that includes 15-inch steel wheels with covers, air-conditioning, a trip computer, On Star, and a 4-speaker CD/MP3 stereo system with satellite radio.

The LT enhances that package with upgraded front seats, full power accessories, and remote door locks. Theres also an LT upgrade called the 2LT package that adds 16-inch aluminum wheels, automatic transmission, cruise control, traction control, and a slew of other benefits. Another LT package called Sport Appearance offers 17-inch alloy wheels, a spoiler, and other racing-styled cues.

In addition to the turbocharged engine and the LTs Sport Appearance package, the SS has 18-inch wheels, a sports-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, turbo boost gauge, and sports seats. Individual options for all trims include a Pioneer sound system, a USB port, remote start, and a sunroof.

The Cobalt has just two engine options now: a 2.2L inline 4-cylinder and the 2.0L turbocharged I-4. The 2.2Lproduces 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Chevrolet pairs it with a 5-speed manual transmission but a 4-speed automatic is available as an option. The automatic LS/LT gets 24/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined.
